Chula Vista Unified School District covers 47 square miles and more than 50 schools, and field trips out of the South Bay typically head to one of three destinations: the Living Coast Discovery Center (1000 Gunpowder Point Dr, Chula Vista, CA 91910) on the Sweetwater Marsh National Wildlife Refuge, the San Diego Zoo (2920 Zoo Dr, San Diego, CA 92101), or the USS Midway Museum (910 N Harbor Dr, San Diego, CA 92101) on the downtown Embarcadero.
Each of those venues has specific bus logistics worth knowing. Living Coast buses pull into the Gunpowder Point Drive lot — a narrow road, so a 35-passenger minibus handles the approach better than a full-size coach. Zoo field-trip groups use the designated bus staging area on Zoo Drive off Park Boulevard; school groups should reserve the field trip program at least four weeks ahead.
At the Midway, school buses and charter buses park in the Navy Pier lot on North Harbor Drive. Full-size charter buses provide TV monitors and overhead storage, which keeps lunches and knapsacks off laps for the I-5 run north. ADA-accessible vehicles are always available — just let us know ahead of time.
